We are so thankful that former THV 11 news anchor, Craig O'Neill included Oakland Heights in his Reading Road Trip today! He read The Man Who Didn't Like Animals to our second graders! Our students loved his animated and energetic read aloud! Thank you, Craig O'Neill for sharing a wonderful story and encouraging our students to read every day! We are keeping the identity of the man in the story a secret so other readers can enjoy the surprise when they read the book!

Mrs. Powers second grade class worked to solve the mystery of why a group of wild bighorn sheep would leave their usual desert habitat to visit a second, very different habitat: a local playground. In the activity, Habitat Scavenger Hunt, students recorded observations of the diversity of life found in the desert and the playground, as well as the physical characteristics of each location. Students combined these observations to create an understanding of how the living and non-living parts of a habitat support the animals that live there. #EducateEquipEmpower

First graders in Mrs. Orellana's class carried out an investigation to determine the relationship between the shape of different bird beaks and the food each bird eats. Students experimented with pointy beaks that are great for picking seeds and wide beaks that are good for scooping. It was a fun and engaging learning experience for everyone! #EducateEquipEmpower

Officer Harris and Mrs. Ditto presented fourth grader, Kalen Leonard, with a “Caught Being Good” certificate. Kalen was caught picking up trash on the playground after high winds carried debris. When asked why he did this, he responded “I care about the planet, and I do not want it to be hurt”. The "Caught Being Good” program is a partnership between the Russellville Police Department, Oakland Heights Elementary, and IHOP restaurant. A student that is “Caught Being Good” is awarded a certificate for one free kids meal at the Russellville IHOP restaurant.

Mrs. Hudson's kindergarten class is learning about open and closed syllables. Students worked together as a team to decode each syllable first. Then they sorted them by their syllable types (open/closed) by looking at the vowel to determine if it is making a long or short sound. #EducateEquipEmpower
